BAYTOWN, Texas - Second year Federal Mogul Dragster driver Joe Fuentes suffered a disappointing first round loss to No. 1 qualifier Shelly Howard during this past weekend's Division 4 Federal Mogul Dragster Series opener at Houston Raceway Park.

Fuentes, who resides in Austin, Texas, struggled in qualifying and qualified No. 8 with an elapsed time of 6.274 at 256.60 mph on his first attempt. Fuentes then smoked the tires in his second qualifying session, then again in his first round matchup with Howard. Howard went on to take the win with a 5.455 at 255.59 mph to Fuentes' 7.021 at 247.02 mph.

"It's just part of the learning curve," said Fuentes. "We figured out how to run on a nice and warm racetrack, and now we have to go back to basics and learn how to run on a cold racetrack like this weekend."

"We had everything like it was in Pomona," continued Fuentes. "The air was a lot better, so the motor was making more power. Our tuner Ora Vasquez was unable to make it, and our inexperience just bit us. We just did not know how to adjust to a cold racetrack."

Even with the disappointing Houston loss, Fuentes and team look to improve at the next Division 4 race to be held at the Texas Motorplex, near Dallas, in two weeks.

"We're going to try some different things if the weather is cold again," stated Fuentes. "We will take the beadlocks off if it gets cold and try the inner liner tires, and just try to calm it down. We look to do a lot better in Dallas for sure."
