Although the Miller Lite Team bowed out earlier than it would have liked, the opening round setback marked just the second first-round loss this season for Don Prudhomme's Top Fuel team which remains third in the points race for the 2000 NHRA Winston Championship.

Sunday's competition saw the track prove to be very tricky for all the Top Fuel teams as three of the eight higher-seeded cars were upset in the first round including No. 1 seed Mike Dunn, No. 4 seed Gary Scelzi and No. 8 seed Dixon. From the left lane, Dixon saw the Miller Lite Dragster lose traction near the 100 foot mark en route to a lap of 6.091 seconds at 215 mph as No. 9 seed Doug Herbert took the first round win (5.643 seconds at 215 mph). Dixon now owns a career mark of 8 wins and 2 losses, and has 5 wins and only 1 loss this season, against the Snap On Tools Dragster.

"Other than being disappointed about the finish, I got in the car, had a good light and we just went out and smoked the tires," said Dixon. "I hate to have that happen in our first race back and when we are trying to break in a brand new car. Our team is better than that and hopefully next week in Dallas we can redeem ourselves."

The Miller Lite/Raybestos pilot remains third in the Winston Top Fuel points race (1,473) and climbed to within 64 points of second place Tony Schumacher (1,537). Scelzi continues to lead in the points (1,698) with only eight rounds of racing left during the two races remaining.

Dixon and Team return to action this weekend (Nov. 3-4) in Dallas when the 15th Annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals resumes after rain postponed the event which was originally scheduled for Oct. 19-22 at Texas Motorplex. The NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series concludes in two weeks at the 36th Annual AAA of Southern California World Finals at Pomona, CA (Nov. 9-12).
