BAYTOWN, Texas - "Sometimes its just not your day," the saying goes. This past weekend at the O'Reilly Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Houston Raceway Park, it just wasn't Federal Mogul Dragster driver David Wells' weekend. Wells fought problems nearly every run in his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" Blown Alcohol Dragster, on his way to a first round loss.
Wells, who helps run the family Ice Creme company in LeMars, Iowa, would just as soon forget the weekend. In the first qualifying session, Wells was on a strong pass when his blower belt came off at half track. On the second session, Wells went up in smoke right off the line. Wells managed to get down the track to an elapsed time of 5.576 seconds at 253.71 mph to qualify him tenth. Wells had to face Shelly Howard in round one. Wells got out of the groove early, and was never able to recover, slowing to a 5.549 at 257.73 mph, to Howard's 5.462 at 258.76 mph. However, Wells feels he has a handle on what was causing some of the problems this weekend.
"Well, we found a problem with the barrel valve," said Wells. "We found some junk in the fuel system that was causing all the adjustments to be way out of whack. We're also going to work some more on the clutch to get it where it needs to be. I think we found everything we needed to know. I just hope everything starts getting squared away pretty soon."
>From Houston, Wells and the Plain Vanilla team will move on to the Division 3 opener in Joliet, Ill., Apr. 27-29. Wells hopes to pick up the win to gain momentum on his up coming Division 5 season.
"If everything gets back to running like it should, we should be able to get back into the 5.40's," stated Wells. "The fuel system is out of whack, and so is the clutch. So if we get those two lined out, it should run real good."
