Septemeber 29, 2009
Robert Hight, driver of the Auto Club Ford Mustang Funny Car, finds himself in a unique position: Hight is the first driver to kick off the NHRA Countdown to 1 with back-to-back wins. Hight and Force Hood are 1-2 in the standings.
YOU HAVE GONE FROM BEING THE CHASER TO THE CHASEE. DO YOU RACE DIFFERENTLY NOW? "No, you can't change what's got you here. You have to run what you've brung, and keep doing what you're doing. You can't change once you're at the dance. We just have to stay focused. We can't get cocky. There are a lot of good cars behind us and if we stumble, a first-round loss is going to kill us. Ashley has as good a car as anybody out there right now, and she's right behind us. It would be so cool to go down to the finals in Pomona and fight it out for the Championship. Let's not forget we have two other John Force Racing Mustangs out there with John Force and Mike Neff. If we slip up they're going to be right there. It's a long way from over, and we just have to stay focused and keep doing what we're doing."
YOU HAVE BEEN THE NUMBER ONE QUALIFIER THREE OUT OF THE PAST FOUR YEARS IN MEMPHIS. DOES THAT HELP WHERE YOU'RE AT RIGHT NOW GOING INTO THE NEXT RACE? "Yes it probably does. I don't really look at all that because you just have to race the conditions you're dealt with on any given weekend. It does seem like sometimes guys do better at certain tracks than others. My crew chief, Jimmy Prock, has won there before with Gary Densham and that was Gary's first time driving. I think we've been to the semis every year there. We haven't been able to win it. Eric Medlen won there one year, he beat me in the semis, so we just have to keep doing what we're doing."
