GRAME EXTENDS LEAD IN NAPA SUPER PRO AT HPT BRACKET DRAG SERIES
TOPEKA, Kan. (July 23, 2005) - Mark Grame of Overland Park, Kan. extended his points lead in the NAPA Super Pro category with a victory in round four of the Heartland Park Topeka E.T. Bracket Race Series on Saturday.
With Bobby Mount of Suppesville, Kan. breathing down his neck in the standings, Grame took out Mount in the semifinals, then disposed of Pat Winsler (Belton, Mo.) in the finals. With a strong car all day in the brutal heat, Grame battled track temperatures that hovered around the 140 degree mark to win a round of bracket racing for the second time this year. In the finals, Grame went 7.570-seconds at 173.29 MPH to Winsler's 10.882-second elapsed time at 136.04 MPH.
The Diamond House Pro E.T. class saw Ken Mull (Clearwater, Kan.) collect his first win of the year. Mull took out Bub Miller (Edwardsville, Kan.) in the final round with a slick 10.430-second E.T. at 123.11 MPH to Miller's 11.444-second quarter-mile pass at 104.80 MPH. The final round was dead-even off the start line as both drivers posted a .005-second reaction time.
Michael Failer (Emmett, Kan.) was another first-time winner this season, taking home the hardware in the Muffler Shop of Topeka Sportsman Class after Dan "Big Red" Moore left the starting line early. Failer went on to a 12.544-second run at 108.59 MPH, while Moore went 12.858-seconds at 103.21 MPH.
Holton, Kan. resident Randall Mavrovich collected the CPA1040 Small Business Solutions Trophy victory, benefiting from a red light start by Jim Nelson (Paxico, Kan.) Mavrovich went 15.516-seconds at 90.09 MPH in his 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle, while Nelson rolled to an 11.751-second run at 114.11 MPH.
Paul Mustain of Ozawkie, Kan. won his second consecutive Mortgage Specialist Motorcycle round, defeating J.P. Smith (Topeka, Kan.) in the finals. Mustain went 11.861-seconds at 112.21 MPH on his 2001 Suzuki, while Smith drove his 1984 Yamaha to a 12.164-second pass at 106.04 MPH.
Sunday will be the fifth round of the Heartland Park Topeka E.T. Bracket Drag Race Series, as well as the final qualifications for the Wyoming Ethanol NHRA West Central Division National Open. Gates open for spectators at 8 a.m., with racing scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
Heartland Park Topeka, a multi-purpose racing facility located in Topeka, Kan. annually hosts NHRA POWERade drag racing, Championship OFF-Road Racing (CORR), and the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) in addition to many other events throughout the race season.
