HALLSVILLE, Tex - Federal Mogul Dragster title contender Jay Meyer will be looking for more than just locking up the Division 4 Championship at this weekend's resumption of the twice rain delayed Division 4 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Hallsville Raceway. Meyer will be looking to pick up his "magic" fifth in-division victory to catch current points leader Rick Santos for the world title.
The Freeport, Texas driver is one of two drivers that still have a mathematical shot at catching Santos for the world title, with Meyer currently being ranked No. 2 nationally. With Santos one divisional win away from having a perfect season (Federal Mogul Dragster drivers can only claim 5 of their best national events, and 5 of their best divisional events towards the championship points), Meyer has his sights on matching that feat. A win in Hallsville would be his fifth divisional win, and seventh overall win of the season, leaving him only three national events away from a perfect season with four races remaining to claim.
Meyer said, "We have the opportunity to pick up 85 divisional points this weekend if we win. At this point in the season, that is a big jump since we have attended so many nationals. This is a very, very big race, especially with Rick [Santos] so close to a perfect season."
Meyer comes in to the event hot off a win at his last race, the Winston No Bull Showdown in Bristol, Tennessee. This weekend, he is qualified No. 1 with a 5.674/247.86 that he ran before the race was postponed, and is scheduled to run former Top Fuel legend Gene Snow in the first round.
"We have a pretty good setup from Bristol, and if the track is anywhere close to what the Bristol track was, we'll back it down and try to get down the track. If we get by the first round, we will have something to tune off of. You always have a lot of worries going into a rain out situation like this, and the first round is always a killer."
After Hallsville, Meyer intends to close out the year with a late season run for the National Championship. Meyer plans to attend Memphis, Topeka, Dallas, and Houston to make that run.
"We have every intention of trying to catch Santos. We have to win three out of the last four national events, so we have one "oops" in there to fall back on. We are certainly not going to lay down, were going to throw everything we got at him."
Eliminations will be ran on Saturday, with first round for the Federal Mogul Dragsters starting at 11 a.m.
