HALLSVILLE, Texas - This weekend, Federal Mogul Dragster pilot Shelly Howard will enter Drag Racing's equivalent of baseball's "seventh inning stretch" at this weekend's NHRA Division 4 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series Race Five in Hallsville, Texas. Coming into this weekend's event Howard holds a 31 point lead over division rival Troy Buff, and is second in national standings.
Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., feels that her main focus this weekend is just to win the event, rather than worrying about the points chase. She believes concentrating on the points too much will take her focus away from the race at hand.
"We really just want to go out there and win the race," said Howard. "I really don't want to dwell too much on the points situation. I want to do the best that I can without adding too much pressure from the points situation. If we win the race, the points will take care of themself."
"We just want to get the car to run consistent, and for me to do my job driving," added Howard. "That's really all that we can do. We can't control what anybody else does."
Howard qualified No. 2 at this event last year with an elapsed time of 5.71 seconds. With Hallsville being one of the more marginal tracks on the tour, Howard feels conditions will be the key to whether they will be able to improve this year.
"There is no telling how we are going to run this weekend," stated Howard. "You change so much from year to year, and you have to change some for Hallsville, too, so it is difficult to predict what kind of times we can run there. We'll just have to see what the track can hold after cars start running."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the Federal Mogul Dragsters with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will follow on Sunday. Stay tuned to the Howard team's award winning website, www.ShellyHoward.com</A>, for day by day updates of the team's progress from Hallsville.
