EIGHT WINS FOR GOODYEAR IN NHRA RACE AT TOPEKA
TOPEKA, Kan. (June 2, 2009) -- Drivers racing on Goodyear rubber won eight times in 12 chances at the O'Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka, putting two clear messages out to drag racers around the country.
The first message was that Goodyear's variety of tires does the best job with the most drag racing applications under the toughest conditions. Goodyear-shod cars won four times in the professional categories and four times in the sportsman categories. Goodyear-equipped cars have collected 40 wins in NHRA national competition so far this season, the best total among tiremakers.
Message two was that, since two of Goodyear's wins came on tires that have been in competition for less than a full season, the tiremaker's development program continues to pace the tire industry.
The climatic conditions at HPT were as difficult as the NHRA racers have seen this year with track temperatures above 125 degrees in the final round.
Larry Dixon, Ron Capps and Allen Johnson won in the NHRA's Full Throttle Drag Racing Series pro categories and Tim Tindle was the winner in the Get Screened America Pro Mod Challenge. Jim Whiteley, Bruno Massel, Adam Davis and Ryan Herem won on Goodyear tires in the NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.
Tindle's victory came in Pro Mod competition on Goodyear's D2540 rear drive tire. The tire was introduced into competition for Pro Mod racers and competitors in the NHRA's Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car categories.
The Pro Mod program is open to competition among tiremakers and the competition is difficult. The race marked the first time the Pro Mods have raced at HPT. Tindle made a 6.059-second/235.47 mph pass to win the final round.
Herem's Super Comp victory came in his first time driving a dragster. Owned and tuned by veteran Justin Lamb, the car was equipped with Goodyear's D2532 rear drive tire. The win was Herem's first in national competition.
Like the Pro Mod category, NHRA Super Comp racing is open to competition among tiremakers.
Dixon's victory in Top Fuel was his second of the season and came at the expense of final round opponent Clay Millican.
Capps beat Ashley Force Hood in the Funny Car final. It was the fourth win of the season for Capps and the 29th of his career. Capps maintained his lead in the Funny Car standings.
Johnson's Pro Stock victory was his first in nearly three seasons.
Whiteley's win in Top Alcohol Dragster was his second this season and seventh of his career. His margin of victory was .0075 of a second, just enough to keep Goodyear undefeated in the category in national competition this season.
Davis' win in Stock Eliminator was another close one. His third career national event win came by a margin of two feet.
Massel collected his first national event win in Competition Eliminator.
