McCLENATHAN, BECKMAN WIN NHRA RACE IN RAINY ARIZONA
CHANDLER, Ariz. (Feb. 22, 2010) ^Ö It doesn^Òt rain often in the Arizona desert, but when wet weather does arrive, it makes an impact.
Cory McClenathan and Fast Jack Beckman were the only drivers crowned winners in the NHRA^Òs Arizona Nationals at Firebird International Raceway over the weekend.
McClenathan and Beckman won their respective Full Throttle Drag Racing Series final rounds Monday after Sunday^Òs elimination rounds were soaked by several rainstorms. Both winners raced on Goodyear tires.
McClenathan^Òs Top Fuel victory came at the expense of Doug Kalitta. McClenathan posted a final round elapsed time of 3.813 seconds and was clocked at 316.67 mph. Kalitta^Òs numbers were 4.736 seconds and 219.47 mph.
McClenathan left the southwest with the Top Fuel points lead, narrowly, over Kalitta.
Beckman is one of the few drivers in history with a winning record against 14-time Funny Car champ John Force and Beckman beat Force in that category^Òs final Monday. Still, Force leads the standings after two races.
The weekend was marred by an accident involving Antron Brown. During a run, his Top Fuel car lost a wheel assembly, which became detached and fatally injured a female spectator. This was a tragic accident, and Goodyear's thoughts and prayers are with the woman^Òs family and friends. The NHRA is investigating the incident and Goodyear will provide whatever support it can to help. The Pro Stock cars still have three rounds to run and will complete the Firebird race in March as part of the Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla.
The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series sportsman teams were also unable to complete their portion of the Arizona event and will complete their racing at a later date.
