Tom Martino came out of the box strong during the first day of qualifying for the Sears Craftsman Nationals. The Farmingdale, NJ native opened with a strong 6.908-second, 199.88 mph run in the afternoon session which was good enough for 5th. Realizing he would improvement to maintain his position, Martino responded by blasting down the Madison quarter-mile in 6.878 second with a tops speed of 199.52 mph. This placed the CENTURY 21 Grand Am 4th at the qualifying midpoint, and sent the Martino crew back to their hotel happy with their day's efforts, which virtually guarantee their participation in Sunday's final eliminations.

"We were a little heavy clutch tonight, but the track handled it, so it turned out to be a nice run. Without that, we might have had a shot at the pole, because it made a nice move down track. Even so, I am extremely happy. The CENTURY 21 Grand Am made two good runs today, and hopefully we can back that up with two more tomorrow!"
