FUNNY CAR

WHIT BAZEMORE, TEAM WINSTON CAMARO Z28, ends up No. 14 qualifier, 5.268/270.92.

BAZEMORE: IS IT ANY BETTER? "No. Obviously, being No. 14 qualifier wasn't what we planned on, but considering some of the problems that the team has faced in the past two days it could be said that we are lucky to be in the field. We smoked the tires this morning. We were able to pedal and save it and run a 5.26. We had some mechanical problems yesterday, we had to change motors this morning before that run. The pressure was really on. By no means are we satisfied with our performance. That said, the new car is different, the chassis, and we are still trying to learn how to apply power in the clutch with the new Z28 to a tricky track. I think that if we can get past a couple of hundred feet without smoking the tires I think the aerodynamics of the Camaro are going to be beneficial for us and we will see a difference. But the key is that we have to get the engine and the clutch to work right to that point to see a change." ON THE FIRST ROUND ON SUNDAY: "We run Force in the first round, there's nothing like taking on the big dog early. Usually to win a race you are going to have to beat John Force somewhere along the way normally, so it is not that big a deal. I like racing him. They have a lot more time with their Mustang than we do with our Camaro. We are certainly the underdog here, not like it was last year. I don't mind being the underdog, I've been the underdog all my life. Actually, I think we do better when we are the underdog. The fans will see a great matchup in the first round and we will give them a good race."

CHUCK ETCHELLS, KENDALL/MA MA ROSA'S PIZZA/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28, is No. 10 qualifier, 5.224/283.73, established in the first session on Friday afternoon. Etchells faces Dean Skuza in the first round.

ETCHELLS: "The way we went in the last few sessions, it was obvious we were tuning in the wrong direction. Naturally, you never want your first run out of the box to be your best. You want to improve on it somewhere, which is what we were trying to do. We weren't looking for a killer run. So, tomorrow will be a big challenge. We will have to take whatever we used in the last three rounds and throw it away. On the positive side, we have an outstanding pair of crew chiefs in Tim and Kim Richards. They will take all the information we have and develop a new game plan for eliminations. It won't be easy, but with the experience and talent we have on this Kendall Camaro team, we'll get after it in the first round, and hope to have a long afternoon." (quote courtesy of Jon Knapp.)

RON CAPPS, COPENHAGEN CAMARO Z28, is No. 4 qualifier, 5.138/286.16, set in the third qualifying session, this morning. Capps faces Phil Burkart, Jr. in first round.
