After a great day of qualifying on Friday at the Sears Craftsman Nationals in Madison, Ill. Gary Densham and the Team NEC/ Auto Club of Southern Calif. still had a few tricks left in their bag.

"After reviewing the weather forecast for Saturday, we knew that we might only have one shot at improving our qualifying time, said Densham."

Round 3 of Funny Car qualifying was already seeing temps well into the 80 degree range wtih forcasted temps well into the 90's by late afternoon. Densham and Crew however were able to muster a 5.23 et in Saturday's first round to qualify them in the number 6 position.

With track conditions only looking to get worse with the afternoon heating of the day, Densham chose to stay out of the final round of qualifying.

"We knew that with the afternoon heat, the track wouldn't hold any improving times or big speeds, so we felt confident that we were solidly in the show..I think it was a good choice, said Gary, as the Team NEC/Auto Club of Southren Calif. Dodge Avenger Funny Car remained in the Number 6 spot.

Densham is scheduled to do battle with Al Hoffmann and his GM Goodwrench Pontiac Firebird in Round 1 on Sunday.
