Wells looking to start a 'win streak' in Denver

MORRISON, Colo. - Current NHRA Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster points leader David Wells will be looking for his second straight divisional win during this weekend's NHRA Division 5 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Bandimere Speedway just outside of Denver. Wells won the Division 5 event in Brainerd, Minn., two weeks ago, and would love to extend his points lead with another win on 'The Mountain.'

Wells, who helps run the family ice cream business in LeMars, Iowa, had fought tire shake problems much of the year until going to a new clutch combination in Chicago. The new combination paid off with a win in Brainerd, but the unusually high altitude of Bandimere Speedway will require drastic changes to the tune-up to adjust. Wells has a pretty good history of success in Denver, and still feels that some of his new clutch combination will work with his usual high altitude set up.

"We have a pretty good tune-up for Denver that we normally use," said Wells. "We usually do pretty well there, so we'll just have to do our normal set up there, and work with the clutch a little. Mid to low .70's is what we ran up there last year, and we'll have to see if we can't do better than that."

With warm weather forecasted this weekend, Wells feels that may make it tougher than it already is to tune for.

"The weather forecast for the weekend is hot," Wells commented. "That makes that track a little greasy and hard to get down, so we'll have to see what it will let us run. With those conditions, we probably won't be able to set any records or anything. You never know. Last year when we ran there, it wasn't that hot. It's going to affect it, it's just a matter of how much."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the Federal Mogul Dragsters at 4 p.m., with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to SummitRacing.com's Drag Race Central for round by round updates on the action from Denver.
