Drag-Racing Underway in Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, FL. -- Racing kicked off today at Gainesville Raceway's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional event. This is the second event in the Southeast division for the 2008 season. In the first rounds of qualifying at Gainesville Raceway, Comp Eliminator pilot Lee Sharp, and Super Stock driver Bob Dennis took the No. 1 qualifying positions in their classes.
Sharp of Marville, Tenn., out ran the field that included Frank Cervelli a resident of Mt. Holly, N.C., with a pass of 7.784 seconds in his '07 Cobalt. Dennis from Shorter, Ala., accomplished the same feat running his '91 Calais to a time of 10.752 seconds.
Top Dragster saw a sweep of Florida residents with Dan Seidel from Port St. Lucie, Fla., taking top honors with a time of 6.480 seconds. In second and third respectively was Troy Williams of Bradenton, Fla., and Fruitland Park, Fla., local Kurt Damron Jr.
In other classes David Toren from Sugar Hill, Ga., drove his '67 Mustang to pole position with a time of 10.778 seconds in Stock Eliminator. Gary Richard who came down the coast from Bay Shore, N.Y., drove his '69 Camaro to a close second. In Top Sportsman Ronnie Davis, who hails from Suwanee, Ga., hit a top speed of over 200 mph. giving him a time of 6.871 seconds which was good enough for the best time in class.
