SCHUMACHER NUMBER ONE AFTER FIRST DAY OF QUALIFYING

GAINESVILLE, Fla., March 12, 2010 - U.S. Army Top Fuel pilot Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher moved into the number one starting spot here Friday following the opening day of qualifying for the 41st annual Tire Kingdom Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway. Schumacher laid down a track record 3.823-second pass at 318.02 mph in his only qualifying session of the day (morning rain wiped out the other session) which was good enough for the top slot.

"That was a nice effort by the U.S. Army team," said the defending world champion. "We were very lucky to get a run in today with the weather issues. We'll see what happens

tomorrow. We'll be ready to get after it I can assure you." Schumacher, who is looking for his fourth career Gatornationals win this weekend, arrived in the Sunshine State holding fourth-place in the standings.

"It would be nice to get to victory lane on Sunday," offered the Chicago-area resident. "As I stated before we got here, we ran well in both Pomona (Calif.) and Phoenix, so we're quite capable of going home with the trophy."

Antron Brown, who drives the Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster, qualified sixth with a 4.208-second run at 203.40 mph.

Prior to taking the track for qualifying, Schumacher and Brown helped the U.S. Army introduce its new School Challenge Program which offers teams of students Mission, Mental and Physical challenges.

"It was a lot of fun to coach the kids," said Schumacher. "You could see they were all quite motivated to be successful."
