Tony Pedregon -- Saturday Qualifying Results

Gainesville, Fla., March 20, 2004 -- The Quaker State racing team finished qualifying today for the NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway and made their best pass of the weekend in the final session. Defending Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon ran an elapsed time of 5.025 seconds at 302.41 mph to qualify 10th.

"We were a little conservative on our last run and there's probably a good chance that we're going to have to walk that fine line tomorrow," said Pedregon. "I think it was definitely a benefit to us that we got down the track that last session. We always have the tendency to want more performance but we also have to be smart.

"I'm not going to take for granted that we should qualify so we're pleased that we made it in the show," said Pedregon. "I think in time one of our goals will be to improve on our qualifying position but at this point we're still in the learning stages and the fact that we got a couple of good runs in will set the stage for us for tomorrow's eliminations."

Pedregon will face Tommy Johnson Jr. in the first round of eliminations which are set to begin at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. They are 6-6 when facing each other in competition.

Pedregon will be making his 190th career Funny Car start and will be looking for his 50th career final round and 28th career win. Pedregon has already scored a runner up finish this season. (Phoenix)

Tim Wilkerson earned the top qualifier award with a pass of 4.906 seconds at 300.00 mph.

Television coverage of final eliminations can be seen on March 22nd
from 11:30 p.m. -- 1:30 a.m. on ESPN2.
