JOHNSON JR. DRIVES TO FIRST-ROUND FINISH AT GAINESVILLE

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 20, 2005) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. raced his Skoal RacingSM Chevy

Funny Car to a first-round finish Sunday at Gainesville Raceway during the 36th running of the Mac Tools Gatornationals.

Johnson, who qualified sixth at the historic NHRA race with a 4.824-second elapsed time, powered his Skoal Racing Chevy flopper to a performance of 4.913 seconds at 314.57 mph, but it wasn't enough to overcome fellow Chevy driver Jeff Arend, who used a .060 (of-a-second) reaction time and a pass of 4.928, 301.60 to score the round victory. Johnson remains third in the POWERade Funny Car standings.

"The car didn't respond to the changes that we made to counter the hotter conditions that we saw today," Johnson said. "It just didn't react early on in the run and it was way behind what it should have run. We were looking for a mid-4.80."

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 18th annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals, April 8-10, at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas.
