Geoffrion, Escort ZX2 qualify 5th at Gainesville.

GAINESVILLE, Fla., March 15, 2003 - So far, Scott Geoffrion is very happy with the performance of Hurley Blakeney's new NitroFish Escort ZX2 Pro Stock entry even though he's only made five full runs on the car.

And he wasn't too surprised he was the No. 5 qualifier for Sunday's Mac Tools Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway. His 6.798-second, 202.70 mph run in Saturday's first session was his quickest and fastest - and the car isn't even broken in yet.

"I knew when it ran the 6.844 Friday that it was capable of running quick," said Geoffrion, from San Clemente, Calif. "I felt it could run a 6.80, but the 6.79 was a nice surprise. I knew we had the horsepower. The car is awesome. It's so stable."

Geoffrion, who crashed the team's Ford Mustang in the first round at Phoenix three weeks ago, had runs of 6.88, 6.84 and 6.79. The car experienced tire shake and he aborted the last attempt.

Geoffrion meets Mark Pawuk in Sunday's opening round.
