Geoffrion reaches quarterfinals at Gators.

GAINESVILLE, Fla., March 16, 2003 - Although he lost in Sunday's quarterfinals to eventual Mac Tools Gatornationals runner-up Jeg Coughlin Jr., Scott Geoffrion considers Hurley Blakeney's new NitroFish Ford Escort ZX2 Pro Stock entry to be an eventual race winner.

Geoffrion notched his quickest and fastest run, qualified fifth and won his first-round match over Mark Pawuk at Gainesville Raceway.

"We have a pretty awesome racecar," said Geoffrion of the first Ford ZX2 in the category - but certain not to be the last. "A week ago we didn't even know if we'd be here. Don Ness built a great car. It went straight on every run and we learned something on every run."

The only thing Geoffrion lacks, he added, is seat time. "I need to get more comfortable in the car, but that will come with each run I make. It's a learning curve. We have less than 10 runs on the car. I think the other drivers know we have a good racecar.

Geoffrion's 6.798-second, 202.70-mph qualifying run was his career best.

In the first round, he posted a 6.818 at 201.92 to Pawuk's 6.846 at 201.43. The car slowed to a 6.891 at 201.11 against Coughlin's 6.839 at 201.38.

Geoffrion's performance moved him into 12th place with 97 points, 21 behind 10th place Vieri Gaines. Greg Anderson leads with 265.

The car now heads for the paint shop this week and will next appear on track at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, April 4-6, for the SummitRacing.com Nationals.
