Capps And Skoal Racingsm Crew Suffer Early Setback In Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 21, 2004) -- Ron Capps' attempt to capture his 15th career NHRA victory and help team owner Don "the Snake" Prudhomme inch closer towards his 100th career victory fell short when the California driver fell in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations Sunday at Gainesville Raceway.

Capps, one of 13 NHRA drivers to have earned victories in both Top Fuel and Funny Car, matched-up against longtime rival John Force in round one. The Skoal Racing driver used a startling-line advantage to get an early jump on Force and raced to a run of 5.143 seconds at 259.66, but Force outdistanced Capps' Monte Carlo Funny Car at the finish line with a performance of 5.000 at 273.47.

"We are going to run into tough weekends like this," Capps said. "You don't expect to run into a track that's tough to get down until the summer months. We did so well in testing and now we're fighting to get the car down the track. It's just a matter of staying after it. It's easy to throw your hands up in the air and shrug your shoulders and say what are we going to do? But, that's what makes champions, champions. And then win you win it really pays off because you've been through a lot of adversity."

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the fifth annual Summitracing.com NHRA Nationals, April 1-4, at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
