Gainesville, Fla. - - Under overcast and sometime rainy skies, the Mac Tools Gatornationals began qualifying today for the 16 positions available in five professional categories. In Pro Stock Truck, Bob Panella, from Stockton, Calif., reset the Gainesville Raceway speed record when he recorded a pass of 180.00 mph in the opening session. Coupled with his elapsed time of 7.532 seconds, Panella finished the first session in the number two spot. He didn't improve in the second session by virtue of his pass 7.563 seconds at 179.21 mph and ended the day in the ninth qualifying position. Additionally, the mph ante was upped in the second session when Greg Stanfield, from Bossier City, La., ran a speed of 180.36 mph to reset the track record.

"We had the right lane in the second session and that hurt us. It is real slippery out there. We were in and out of the groove and that scrubbed off both time and speed. We'll look over all our computer data and come up with a set up for tomorrow. If we can hit the right set up, we'll be right back up toward the top of the field," said Panella, after a disappointing run in the second session of qualifying. "Nobody ever told me this was easy."
