LUCAS QUALIFIES NO. 4 AT GATORNATIONALS
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 18) -- Morgan Lucas continued his consistency in qualifying ending up in the No. 4 qualifying position with his run of 4.555 seconds, 321.88 mph and he will race No. 13 qualifier, Scott Weis in the opening round of eliminations for the 37th annual ACDelco Gatornationals.
This will mark the fourth time the pair has met in competition, ironically, all in the first round. Lucas leads their series 3-0 and hopes to carry on the winning trend.
"Scott Weis and his team are a bunch of good racers, good people and always are nice to everyone," said Lucas. "They are always trying their best, so we know we can't take them lightly. Our only hope is to get by first round and you know it's going to be tough.
"Weis went down the track both times today running a 4.62 and a 4.68. I hope we can get up there and repeat as we have all weekend so far and win our first round."
Goodyear's Racing Division introduced a new tire compound at the first of the NHRA racing season and now has specified its sole use throughout the professional categories starting with this weekend's Gatornationals. In the two previous events, teams had the option to select the tire of their choice from two possible compounds. The Lucas Oil Racing team with John Stewart and Ronnie Thompson on board as co-crew chiefs chose the newer tire from the start and that education is paying the dividends they had hoped for on this tire issue.
"We ran it all year because we knew it would eventually be mandatory and wanted to be on the top of our game. We feel very fortunate to have as many runs as we do on that tire. Our plan is to still make it quicker before the weekend is over so that mean we still have to keep working on our tune up.
The ACDelco Gatornationals finals will air at 5 p.m. EST Sunday, March 19 on ESPN2 and ESPN2-HD.
