LUCAS OIL TOP FUEL TEAM ADVANCES TO QUARTERFINALS
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 19) --- Morgan Lucas advanced to the quarterfinal round of eliminations at the 37th annual ACDelco Gatornationals before bowing out against NHRA POWERade points leader, Melanie Troxel.
In qualifying, Lucas hurried to the finish line with an elapsed time of 4.555 seconds in Friday's qualifying and secured the fourth position on the Top Fuel ladder. The Lucas Oil Top Fuel team took top honors as the most consistent car in qualifying grabbing the "Full Throttle" award along with $2,500 prize money that goes with the award.
The opening round of Sunday's competition against Scott Weis was a close one with Lucas able to take the win light after running a time of 4.640 seconds, 299.70 mph to Weis' run of 4.685 seconds, 323.85 mph.
As the team prepared for the second round against Troxel; Lucas knew he had steep task of outrunning her as she has gone to the finals in the last four consecutive NHRA races. The Lucas Oil team unfortunately overpowered the track resulting in a loss of traction allowing Troxel to speed by him and take the round win.
"That's just some of the stuff that happens in drag racing," said Lucas with a sheepish grin. "We really haven't had a chance to look at the computer just yet to see exactly what happened. We won our first round, but it's aggravating if you're watching points. We just didn't capitalize on it. Right when we wanted to make progress, we move up to fourth and then we fall back. Hey, it's early in the season and we have plenty of time to catch up. We have a great team and it shows after winning the "Full Throttle" challenge this weekend, which shows a lot of progress for us. We're going to test tomorrow and work out some of the bugs, so we're not disappointed at all. We know we kind of gave one away in our quarterfinals race. Sometimes you have the horseshoe and the luck that goes with it. Eventually, we'll get our chance to take it.
