Whisnant qualifies 11th in Gainesville.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance / Snap-On Tools Chevrolet Cavalier, has qualified at the 34th annual Mac Tools Gatornationals. It was in the first session of qualifying on Saturday that Whisnant drove his Cavalier to a 6.811 / 201.97 mph to take the 11th position on Sunday's eliminations ladder.

"I am pretty pleased to qualify here at the Gatornationals," said Whisnant, "We have really struggled the last two races, and the hard work we put in over the last three weeks seems to have paid off.

"We made a lot of progress in testing last week, but as tough as this class is we knew that we would have to continue to progress. We knew when we arrived if we did not keep moving forward would not be racing here. We picked up a couple hundredths every session, and the result is that we are in the show.

"The way Pro Stock racing is right now there are two races at every event. The race to get in, and then the race on Sunday. Right now, there are 32 cars with a tenth of each other, which shows how close this racing is.

When eliminations get underway Sunday morning Whisnant opponent in Round 1 will be V. Gaines.

"It is very true that if you are one of the 16 cars to get in the show, you can win the race; that is what we will be banking on tomorrow. Last year we made it all the way to the semis. This year we would like to find out what the winner's circle at the Mac Tool Gatornationals looks like."

Eliminations at the 34th annual Mac Tools Gatornationals will begin at 11:00 AM EST on Sunday March 16.
