GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Federal Mogul Funny Car racer Marc White lost a tough round two matchup with Jay Payne during this past weekend's Mac Tools Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla. Payne went on to win the event.
White, from Glendale Heights, Ill., qualified the Etterman Racing 2001 Firebird No. 2 during the first running of the event in March with an elapsed time of 5.755 seconds at 251.72 mph. In round one, he defeated Mike Preslar with a 5.744 at 252.47 mph before the event was rained out. His second round matchup with Payne was the one of the closest of the day. Payne grabbed a slight holeshot off the line and held off White's quicker 5.755 at 249.49 mph with his own 5.768 at 245.00 mph.
"We hurt a motor on our test lap Friday," said White. "So, we had to backup just a little bit. We actually ran what we hoped to run, a mid .70. Unfortunately, Jay was a little bit quicker on the tree than I was, and we got beat. Jay made a good lap, and had a better reaction time, and that was all it took."
From Gainesville, the Etterman Racing Team will move to Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., for the Division 3 opener. White won the '98 Division 3 Championship, and hopes to regain that crown this year.
"Obviously we are disappointed," stated White. "The car is running well enough to win races, and we just seem to find new ways to lose them. We'll keep our heads up and keep going forward. That's the only thing I know how to do, just keep trying. We're going to keep working at it, and sooner or later, good things will come."
