White looking to get a run on year, again

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Marc White is hoping to get a run on the 2002 season yet again during this weekend's Mac Tools Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla. White and the Etterman Racing team had originally hoped to start their early season 'run' two weeks ago at the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event in Houston, but heavy rains postponed that race to June, and now the team will jump headfirst into national event competition.

White, from Glendale Heights, Ill., hopes to have a strong early season in good air so that the team can skip the hot weather races in the middle of the summer.

"We have the same strategy we had in Houston, we want to get a run on the year," said White. "We want to run at good tracks in good weather; we want to run a few races early in the year, and a few races late in the year, and not run as much in the middle, when it is 100 degrees in the Midwest, and the tracks are really greasy. We want to avoid some of those places and run where we can run fast."

With several of the top teams in the country slated to be in attendance this weekend, White knows the team has their work cut out for them.

"We're just going to start out with our basic combination we always run," said White. "There is a couple of things we want to try, so if we qualify well early, we might take a run or two and try a few things. It kind of hurts not getting to run Houston; we would have liked to shake things down and knock the cobwebs out of everything. We'll go out there and do the best we can, and run as hard as it will allow us to run."

Qualifying begins Friday for the Top Alcohol Funny Cars, with one final qualifying session and round one on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for daily recaps of the action from Gainesville.
