DIXON DRIVES MILLER LITE DRAGSTER TO QUARTERFINAL FINISH AT GAINESVILLE
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 19, 2006) Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon, who qualified second at the 37th annual ACDelco Gatornationals, raced to a second-round finish Sunday at Gainesville Raceway.
Dixon used the best reaction time of the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations (.047 of-a-second) to score the wire-to-wire victory over opponent Doug Foley. The 38-time NHRA winner drove his Don Bender-tuned rail to a performance of 4.596 seconds at 322.92 mph, while Foley trailed with a 4.681-second pass.
"I'm not sure what Donnie (Bender) was trying to run on that pass, but it spun the tires early; I know he wasn't happy about that," Dixon said. "He knew that he had to make some adjustments, but we got the win light."
In a marquee match-up of two of the best drivers in drag racing's premier category, Dixon and the Miller Lite Top Fuel team fell to rival Doug Kalitta by the slightest of margins. Dixon blasted the Miller Lite rail to a pass of 4.562 at 314.02, but Kalitta scored the narrow win by the way of a quicker reaction time as his Mac Tools dragster carded a 4.596-second elapsed time to earn the trip to the semifinals.
"The motor had a couple of cylinders out early, we had a few mechanical gremlins and got left on," Dixon said. "It was no fun. There's no way to paint a pretty picture on a loss. There's a million ways to lose a race and only one way to win.
"We're going to stay and test on Monday. Donnie wants to work on the engine so it's a little happier and we don't hurt parts. Then we'll gear up for Houston in two weeks."
The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 19th annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals, March 31-April 2, at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas. Dixon is a two-time winner of the Houston race. The Miller Lite team will remain at Gainesville Raceway on Monday.
