Hillary Will hopes for milestones at Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 14, 2006) -- The last time Hillary Will was on the Gainesville Raceway track was a little over two years ago when she earned her Top Alcohol Dragster license at the Frank Hawley Drag Racing School.
This weekend Will returns to the Gainesville track, this time behind the wheel of the KB Racing-owned, Kalitta Motorsports-managed Top Fuel Dragster, for the NHRA ACDelco Gatornationals, the third of 23 national events on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
"I have never competed at Gainesville Raceway before, but I did have a personal milestone there in January of 2004 when I got my Top Alcohol Dragster license from the Frank Hawley Drag Racing School," said Will. "Earning my license in two days and having Mr. Hawley sign off on it has been one of my prouder racing accomplishments thus far. Hopefully after this race, I'll have other proud racing moments from this track."
The rookie driver, who grew up in Northern California, made her Top Fuel debut at the season-opening CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals in Pomona, Calif., and surprised many when she qualified fourth. At race No. 2 in Phoenix, she notched her first round win during the Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals and is ninth, entering the Gainesville event, in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel point standings.
Although early in the season, the Gatornationals is considered a pivotal race by many drivers. "I remember watching this race on TV last year, and hearing all the drivers talk about the importance of this race, and now I get to be a part of it. My teammate, Dave Grubnic, set a track record at Gainesville Raceway (last year) and I know that a lot of drag racing highlights have been recorded at this track. Hopefully our KB Racing LLC Top Fuel team will come away from this event with some of our own milestones this weekend," added Will.
Qualifying for Will and her KB Racing Top Fuel dragster begins with two sessions on St. Patrick's Day -- Friday, March 17 -- scheduled for 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and concludes with two additional sessions on Saturday -- March 18 -- also at 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Will begins her quest for the ACDelco Gatornationals Top Fuel title on Sunday with eliminations for all classes beginning at 11 a.m. All times are local Gainesville time (ET) and subject to change at anytime.
Qualifying highlights for the 37th annual NHRA ACDelco Gatornationals can be seen on ESPN2 early Sunday morning (March 19) from 12:30-2:30 a.m. ESPN2 will also air same-day television coverage of eliminations from 5 until 7 p.m. on Sunday (March 19).
