GOODYEAR WINS SIX TIMES IN NHRA GATORNATIONALS
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 26, 2008) -- Tony Schumacher changed the history books again as he led six Goodyear-shod winners in the AC Delco Gatornationals NHRA race at Gainesville Raceway.
Schumacher's win the final round of Top Fuel was the 43rd of his career, vaulting him to second on the all-time win list in the category. He trails Joe Amato by nine victories.
The six wins push Goodyear's 2008 total to 14 in the young 2008 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season. Goodyear leads the tire industry with that total. In fact, all other tiremakers combine just to tie Goodyear's 14 wins in NHRA national events.
The other Goodyear-equipped winners at Gainesville included Tony Pedregon (Funny Car), Jeg Coughlin (Pro Stock), John Finke (Top Alcohol Dragster), Peter Biondo (Stock Eliminator) and Brian Forrester (Super Gas).
Schumacher defeated Brandon Bernstein in the Top Fuel final.
Pedregon defeated Gary Densham for the Funny Car win. Densham led at halftrack but Pedregon was able to drive around him for the victory.
Coughlin's Pro Stock trophy came after beating Jason Line in the final round. It was Coughlin's second win of 2008 and the 39th national win of his career.
Finke's victory was his second in national competition but he's only been to three final rounds. A winning record in national final rounds is hard to come by.
Biondo, a Goodyear loyalist, won at the Gatornationals for the second straight season. It was his 33rd national victory.
Forrester repeated his 1998 Gatornationals victory. His margin of victory, about four feet, was largely due to his stunning reaction time of .004 of a second.
