GOODYEAR-EQUIPPED DRIVERS SWAMP OTHERS AT GATORS
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 16, 2009) -- Drag racers will search endlessly for an advantage. Sunday, at Gainesville Raceway, it was easy to find one: They bought Goodyear tires.
Seven of the 11 drivers who earned victories at the 40th running of the AC Delco NHRA Gatornationals raced on Goodyear tires. Goodyear's total was better than all other tiremakers combined and brought to 15 Goodyear's industry-leading count for the young season in NHRA national event competition.
"We were pleased with the performance of our Goodyear Eagles this weekend," said Carolyn Ashbee, Goodyear's sales account manager for drag racing. "It's a great accomplishment to perform so well at the Gatornationals. Not only did our tires perform as expected in the professional ranks, but we also won three times in Sportsman competition."
The winning drivers on Goodyear Eagles in the professional categories included Larry Dixon (in Top Fuel), Bob Tasca (Funny Car) and Jason Line (Pro Stock) in the NHRA's Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. Mike Castellana won in the Pro Mod category.
Goodyear-shod winners in the NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series included Duane Shields (Top Alcohol Dragster), David Eaton (Competition Eliminator) and Brian Forrester (Super Comp).
Dixon's win was the first for Al-Anabi Racing and came in just the team's third race. But it was Dixon's fourth win at the Gatornationals and the 44th win of his career.
"The tire that we have and we race on is a great tire," Dixon said. "It allows you to run quick. In these kinds of conditions -- this was the hottest track we've been on this year -- it makes it so that you don't have to think about the tire because you know it's going to work for you."
The track temperature reached 117 during Sunday's elimination rounds. Dixon beat Cory McClenathan in the final round.
Tasca beat Tony Pedregon in the final round, collecting Tasca's first Funny Car win. But, while the win was his first in the professional ranks, it was not his first taste of success at the Gatornationals.
"That right lane has been incredibly good to me," Tasca said. "I set the Alcohol Funny Car record in that lane and I won my first race in it."
Line is a former Pro Stock champion and, with two wins in the first three races this season, he looks like a threat to win another title.
"For me to do this good this early in the year, I haven't done it, so it feels good," he said.
The next race for the Full Throttle Series is the March 27-29 O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston, Texas.
