GMC SONOMA NOTES & QUOTES 30th ANNUAL MAC TOOLS GATORNATIONALS SATURDAY, MARCH 20, 1999
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 20, 1999) - After qualifying his Dynagear GMC Pro Stock Sonoma in the No. 9 position for the 30th Annual Mac Tools Gatornationals, Dave Spitzer lost in round one of final eliminations today to Mike Coughlin. Spitzer's Sonoma covered the quarter-mile in 7.680 seconds at a speed of 175.57 mph to Coughlin's 7.658 second elapsed time at 174.59 mph.
Dave Spitzer (Dynagear GMC Sonoma) "We came in here, qualified ninth, ran hard and had an opportunity to be competitive. It was a great learning experience. We were just happy to get the Dynagear GMC Sonoma in the race and have the opportunity for a staging battle on the starting line. It was nice to be able to get that first round under our belt and we'll go on from here. This is one of those situations that we'll continue to get better as a team the more we race. We'll go back to the race shop, work on the dyno a little more and try to find some things that will make this truck a little more consistent on race day when it gets hot like this. Some of the things we will be working on is the chassis, the aerodynamics and the air pan. I think those are still areas where we can improve . The truck spun real hard in low gear, and it didn't have a great 60-foot time so we were already two hundredths behind when we got to that point. That's about how we stayed for the rest of the run. I think we could have run a 7.65 but we just spun real hard in low gear. We battled tire spin all weekend and we still don't have the balance on the truck exactly where we want it yet. We've been moving weight around, trying shocks and with some more runs down the track we'll find out where we need to be.
Steve Schmidt (Team Owner) "We were real pleased with how the weekend went. We don't have much experience in the Pro Stock Truck class yet. This is really only the second time out for us and if we could have run just a couple of a thousandths quicker that would have moved us all the way to fifth. We felt that if we would have had the performance, and could have made some nicer runs we could have been fourth. That's about where we are right now. We'll go back to the shop, refine our engine combination, work on our GMC Sonoma a little bit more, and we'll show a gain when we get to Houston."
The next stop for the Pro Stock Truck series is the O'Reilly Nationals at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Tex., on April 8 - 11. Television highlights can be seen on TNN on April 18 beginning at 12:00 p.m. Eastern.
