GMC SONOMA NOTES & QUOTES 30th ANNUAL MAC TOOLS GATORNATIONALS FRIDAY, MARCH 19, 1999 GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 19, 1999) - Pro Stock Truck qualifying for the 30th Annual Mac Tools Gatornationals concluded today at Gainesville Raceway with Dynagear GMC Sonoma driver Dave Spitzer sitting in the No. 9 position with a run of 7.630 seconds at a speed of 176.49 mph. Spitzer improved on yesterday's effort during the first session this morning but slowed in the fourth and final qualifying round to a performance number of 7.673 seconds at 175.39 mph. He will race No. 8 qualifier Mike Coughlin in the first round of eliminations tomorrow. The No. 1 qualifier was Mark Osborne who ran the quickest elapsed time in NHRA Pro Stock Truck history at 7.569 seconds.
Same day final round television coverage of the 30th Annual Mac Tools Gatornationals can be seen on Sunday, March 21 on ESPN2 beginning at 6 p.m. Eastern. ESPN2 will televise one hour of qualifying highlights beginning at 5 p.m. Eastern on Friday, March 19. Dave Spitzer (Dynagear GMC Sonoma) "We were sixth in the first session so we like how we stack up against the rest of the field. This Dynagear Sonoma has a lot left in it, but the final session will be more conducive to what Sunday will be, so hopefully we can pick up a little there. Two thousandths of a second could have bumped us to the No. 6 spot, we're that bunched up together. If we can improve by just a couple of thousandths we can improve our standing for tomorrow. Different conditions and a little more clutch work could be the trick. I think everyone's having trouble with spinning the tires and the guys who can control that will be the ones to beat tomorrow. Once the fuel cars get a couple of laps down through there it should improve. But then that'll create a whole new dilemma to deal with."
Second Session: "We're ready to race tomorrow. The Dynagear GMC Sonoma was fourth quickest in the final session and that will be a good indicator of what to expect tomorrow. We seem to have been consistent no matter what the conditions have been. We ran well yesterday morning, and then again in the afternoon and then today we were able to step it up. It seems that the worse the track gets the better we run. I know that's uncommon but that seems to be the case for us this weekend -- but from a racing standpoint, that's a good asset to have. If the track stays slippery and hot, then I think we can advance a couple of rounds and put ourselves in a position to win this thing. We race the No. 8 qualifier in the first session and from an elapsed time standpoint, there's not much of a difference. For the first couple of rounds it's going to come down to whoever leaves first."
