CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES MAC TOOLS GATORNATIONALS NHRA WINSTON DRAG RACING SERIES GAINESVILLE RACEWAY Friday, March 13, 1998
KURT JOHNSON, ACDELCO CAMARO Z28, continues to maintain his status as the quickest and fastest Pro Stock Camaro driver in history, as he is No. 2 qualifier, with an e.t. of 6.900, and top speed of 199.77 mph. Kurt held No. 1 spot for three rounds (including last weekend's two runs), until Jeg Coughlin set a lower e.t. of 6.894 in today's final round of qualifying. "I kind of got out of the groove a little bit and just kind of got squirrelly. I over-corrected a little bit and it got away from me and I decided to click it off rather than be a super star because I knew I was in the show and I wasn't going to be bumped. The Camaro was fine. Actually, it spun the tires hard and threw me around. It wasn't meant to be. We will straighten it out for tomorrow and see if we can go four rounds." ON TESTING AT BRADENTON'S (Fla.) "SPEEDWORLD" TRACK THIS WEEK: "We ran a 6.87 and a top speed of 199 mph. The air there was actually a little better than it was here, and there was a lot of rubber on the race track. The conditions were good and it was perfect. We should be going that quick here, but we don't quite have a handle on it. There's nothing wrong with the track, we're just overpowering it right now. We have to find a happy medium somewhere. We got by this morning, had a good straight run, tonight we got out of the groove. We face Scott (Geoffrion) tomorrow (in first round). The last time it was just practice (at Phoenix when Kurt beat him in first round of eliminations.) I can keep up with him, he's going to have to keep up with me."
LARRY MORGAN, RAYBESTOS CAMARO Z28, failed to qualify. He was 22nd in the field of 35 Pro Stock cars, with an e.t. of 6.978/197.97.
This is the quickest Pro Stock field in NHRA history, with e.t.s ranging from 6.894 (Jeg Coughlin), and Ron Krisher (No. 16, 6.958).
CHUCK ETCHELLS, KENDALL/MA MA ROSA'S PIZZA/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28, is No. 4 qualifier, 4.965/306.74. "We're making consistent passes and my teams is giving me a great car to drive each round. If we can keep it together tomorrow, we have a good chance of giving these guys some trouble. Nothing would make us happier than to make it two in a row."
RON CAPPS, COPENHAGEN CAMARO Z28, is No.8 qualifier, 4.998/302.52. ON THE NEW '98 CAMARO BODY: "I love this Camaro body. We haven't run as good as with the '97 body, but it has nothing to do with the body. Roland (Leong, crew chief) is trying some new things and sometimes before you go forward you have to take a couple of steps backward. Roland is doing some experimenting with the fuel system. The body is a real pleasure to drive. I can see a lot more out of the windshield. It felt more stable and we ran a 302 (mph) on that run, but the Camaro makes it feel like I'm going 55 down the highway, it's planted so well. We believe that we're going to have to run 4.8s this year to stay ahead of the pack. 4.95 or .94 isn't going to do it. We're trying some new things and hopefully we will roll it out first round tomorrow and be there at the end of the day."
NOTE: There are only two Camaro Funny Cars in the field. After two events, it's Camaro 2, the competition 0, with Ron Capps winning the season opener, the Chief Auto Parts Winternationals in Pomona, and Etchells taking the victory at the ATSCO Nationals in Phoenix. Capps leads in points, Etchells is second.
Team Chevrolet Top Fuel Dragster drivers Larry Dixon and Cristen Powell are in the field. Dixon, in the Miller Lite Top Fueler, is No. 7, 4.646/317.01. Powell, in the Team Rebook Top Fuel Dragster, is No. 16, 4.780/298.80.
