GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Pro Modified veteran Ed Hoover needs the right kind of spark to earn a berth in the prestigeous eight-car Pro Modified field at the NHRA Mac Tools Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla. Hoover, 40, of Columbia, SC., battled electrical problems after his first day of qualifying. He sits in the ninth qualifying position, just .003 off of the bump spot.

Hoover slightly improved on his second run of the day with a 6.373/213.47 in the Paul Trussell-owned 1963 Corvette. He had previously earned a spot in the field with a 6.375.

"We're going through this car with a fine-tooth comb and trying to find our problems," explained Hoover, the winner of the inaugural Pro Modified event in 1990. "We've got a good car and it should easily run in the 6.20s. We'll find it eventually, I just hope it's soon."

Hoover admitted that his car actually lost fire twice during the course of his run. On a nitrous car, when the car loses power, it actually resets the nitrous system and it cycles through the systems again.

Hoover will look to have the gremlins worked out by the time the third session of Pro Modified exhibitions roll around tomorrow afternoon at 1:30. The final session is slated for 4:30 PM.
