Kalitta going to Gainesville set for Mac Tools Gatornationals win.
Gainesville, Fla., Mar. 10, 2003 -- Doug Kalitta and the rest of the competitors in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series will make their first appearance of the 2003 season east of the Rocky Mountains this weekend, March 13-16, at the 34th annual running of the Mac Tools Gatornationals at famed Gainesville Raceway.
Kalitta and his Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster team make the journey to the Sunshine State hoping to keep up their current qualifying prowess. The Mac Tools team has qualified No. 1 at both NHRA national events held so far. They would also like to parlay a strong qualifying performance into their first victory of the 2003 POWERade championship points campaign. A win in Gainesville at their sponsor's event would certainly make up for any frustrations they have had in the young season.
"We have been qualifying incredibly," said Kalitta. "Unfortunately, we have not gone as far into final eliminations as we are capable of. We want to go to Gainesville and be low qualifier again, but, more importantly, we want to go to Gainesville and get a win in front of all of the Mac Tools fans, distributors, regional managers and corporate staff."
Kalitta is familiar with the winner's circle at Gainesville Raceway. He took home the Top Fuel title trophy from there in 2000 after defeating Tony Schumacher in the final round. Kalitta also established low elapsed time of the event in the finals with a 4.614-second pass down the quarter-mile.
"Gainesville is a great place to race," said co-crew chief Jim Oberhofer. "Gainesville Raceway is legendary in our sport. The fans at the Mac Tools Gatornationals are always cheering loudly and excited to see great drag racing. We always have fun in Gainesville."
The Mac Tools dragster will be on display during the Gainesville City Fest, a special event that will feature the stars and cars of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series in activities held March 11-12, including a convoy of racecar transporters from Gainesville Raceway to downtown Gainesville and ending at the Downtown Plaza. The convoy is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday.
After two of 23 national events, Kalitta is sixth in POWERade Top Fuel championship points.
