Doug Kalitta looking to step up one more notch in Gainesville
Gainesville, Fla., March 15, 2004 -- Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster driver Doug Kalitta is riding a wave of momentum into the Sunshine State for his sponsor's race. After two consecutive final round appearances to open his 2004 Top Fuel championship campaign, Kalitta hopes that this weekend's 35th annual Mac Tools Gatornationals, March 18-20, will be a repeat performance of his victory at the famed Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville, Fla., in 2000.
The Mac Tools Gatornationals is the third event of 23 on the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series tour.
Kalitta, an NHRA 15-event winner and owner of the quickest run in NHRA history (4.428 sec., Chicago 2003), is understandably excited about his earlier postings and his second place position in NHRA points, but he wants to bring home the winner's hardware this time out.
"So far, so good," Kalitta said with a slight chuckle. "Our Mac Tools team is pretty happy with our season so far. Of course, we would have liked to have won each of those races, but we're pleased with our consistency."
"These races are so tough to win. It takes a great team and some luck. We've not been lucky enough to win, but hopefully that means that luck will be on our side if we make the finals in Gainesville. We're more than ready for a win now."
"Gainesville is always a great place for us to race because we know there is always a huge crowd at the Mac Tools Gatornationals. Plus, we know that we'll have all of the Mac Tools distributors, customers and staff there cheering for us."
Doug's Kalitta Motorsports teammate and cousin Scott Kalitta, driver of the Mac Tools/Jesse James Top Fuel dragster, will be competing this weekend in the colors of the special Jesse James Flame dragster. Also in Gainesville, their teammate "Aussie Dave" Grubnic will fly the banner of Mac Tools' new Customers For Life program on his Kalitta Air dragster.
Qualifying for the 35th annual Mac Tools Gatornationals begins Friday at Gainesville Raceway.
