Herbert Upset By Teammate Paul Romine; Moves To 9th In Points
GAINESVILLE, Fla., March 17, 2002 - Doug Herbert could only shake his head again after another disappointing setback in NHRA Powerade Series racing action Sunday during the Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.
Herbert had his best qualifying effort of the season on a hot, slippery racetrack, qualifying fifth at 4.710 at 306.33 mph. The run came in the Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster's first qualifying attempt and eventually paired him against teammate Paul Romine, who will be racing the Herbert-owned CarQuest dragster in IHRA competition again this year.
"We need to run in the mid-4.70s in the first round," is what Herbert said prior to the race. And the Johnny West-tuned dragster ran 4.740 at 312.93 mph. But Romine's team stunned Herbert, turning out a 4.732 at 303.84 to get the upset victory. Romine qualified 12th with a best of 4.862 at 292.33 mph.
"We ran what we thought we need to run, but it wasn't enough," was Herbert's philosophical explanation of the results. "They stepped up their performance more than we expected. The results showed that we were definitely here to race. I said Saturday that one of our cars was going to the second round. I wish it would've been the Snap-on car."
Romine, meanwhile, turned out to be the Top Fuel surprise during eliminations. He beat Doug Kalitta in the quarterfinals with a 4.835 at 295.92 before exiting against eventual race winner Larry Dixon in the semifinals.
"I didn't have a very good reaction time against Romine," Herbert added. "I'm going to take my bracket car out and make laps next week to improve my reaction times."
Despite the early loss, Herbert was able to move from 10th to ninth in points. He has 117 points.
Herbert's next outing is the Summitracing.com Nationals, April 5-7 at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Pro Winners: Larry Dixon, Top Fuel; Tony Pedregon, Funny Car; Darrell Alderman, Pro Stock.
