Gainesville, Fla. - Ron Capps ran his quickest elapsed time, reached his second straight final round and finished second for the second consecutive NHRA race Sunday at the Mac Tools Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.
And he couldn't find much to fault about "seconds" again after his U.S. Tobacco Co. Camaro Funny Car lost to Jerry Toliver in the finale.
"It's tough to be unhappy about being runner-up with the way things are going right now, especially when you use last year as a reference," said Capps. "We are in the (championship) hunt right now. The car is very consistent the way Ace (crew chief Ed McCulloch) is running it."
Capps recorded wins over Al Hofmann (with a 4.899-second time), Del Worsham (with his career best of 4.838) and Scotty Cannon (4.986) before meeting Toliver. His semifinal time was up because the supercharger studs pulled out of the manifold on the run and Capps shutoff the engine.
"Ace put on a new blower and manifold and tried to run another low 4.80 time, but the tires shook and I had to pedal the throttle," recalled Capps. "When I did, the front end came up and all I could see was the horizon. I was looking for Toliver out my side window. When he went by, I got out of the throttle and pedaled it to get the front end down.
"I heard a song the other day that said you get what you put in and our U.S. Tobacco Co. team is putting a lot of effort into what's going on this year."
The result moved Capps into third place with 217 points, 16 behind Force and 90 behind Toliver.
The next event, the SummitRacing.com Nationals, takes place April 7-9 at Las Vegas.
