Del Worsham is currently tied for second in the NHRA Full Throttle Funny Car point standings. He was the No. 4 qualifier and advanced to the semifinals at Phoenix where he lost to event winner Ron Capps; he defeated Cruz Pedregon and Robert Hight on his way to the semifinals.
The Alan Johnson Al-Anabi Racing Funny Car has been a consistent qualifier early in the season. After qualifying second at Pomona, Worsham's Toyota Solara qualified fourth in Phoenix giving him an average qualifying position of third.
Worsham won the Gatornationals in 2004. One year ago at Gainesville, Worsham qualified 10th and advanced to the second round where a mechanical problem ended his day.
Worsham prior to Gainesville:
"We're getting better. The semifinal finish at Phoenix was definitely better than Pomona. The bottom line is our team is really young, and we're a new team at the same time so we're still learning. We're new and young, but we're still doing some good things. We're tied for second place in points going into Gainesville, and I see us getting better every race.
"There's a lot of excitement on our team, and when we don't perform as well as we should, I see the disappointment in their eyes. They want to do well, they want to win, and they're not happy just going to the semifinals. I can see how determined they are to do well, and it's good to see how they react when they don't do as well as they want. I don't want to see them disappointed, but I'm glad to see how they react when things doing go as they had hoped.
"I won in Gainesville in 2004 and have had a couple of runner ups. We've had some good times there and we've won some races. It's a pretty fast track, and we appear to have a pretty fast car so I can see the two of them meshing together."
