Grubnic takes Mac Tools Customers For Life/Kalitta Air dragster to top spot in Gainesville qualifying
Gainesville, Fla., March 20, 2004 -- For the second NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series national event in a row, David Grubnic is No. 1 qualifier. The journeyman driver from Brisbane, Australia known as "Aussie Dave" took the top spot (4.623 sec., 311.74 mph) in the final session of qualifying Saturday at the Mac Tools Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.
This is Dave's third No. 1 qualifier in his ten-year career. His first was in Memphis in 1999.
Grubnic was given the driving duties of the Kalitta Air Top Fuel dragster in January when team owner, crew chief and drag racing legend Connie "the Bounty Hunter" Kalitta added Dave's rail to his already powerful Kalitta Motorsports arsenal with nephew Doug Kalitta, driver of the Mac Tools dragster, and son Scott Kalitta, driver of the Mac Tools/Jesse James dragster.
This weekend, Grubnic is driving a specially painted "Customers For Life" racecar for Mac Tools to help them pay tribute to their 1,600+ distributors.
"I have always said you are only as good as the people you surround yourself with," Grubnic said. "Fortunately for me, I am surrounded by the best there is. Connie, Jon"O" (Oberhofer, co-crew chief) and all of our guys on all three teams are just the best -- hands down."
"This is especially a great deal for us this weekend because we are honoring all of the great Mac Tools distributors with our car. John Aden (Mac Tools President) and his staff are wonderful to work with, and it's a privilege for me to qualify No. 1 in this car at their event in front of all of their distributors and fans."
Grubnic will face Cory McClenathan in the first round of final eliminations Sunday.
Dave's teammate Scott Kalitta, who is also driving a specially painted entry this weekend, the Jesse James Flame dragster, qualified in the seventh slot, while their third teammate Doug Kalitta in the Mac Tools dragster qualified 12th. Scott will race Bruce Litton in the opener, and Doug will pair up with defending Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon in round one.
Final eliminations begin at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow at Gainesville Raceway.
