Defending Top Fuel Gatornationals champ Dave Grubnic qualifies No. 7 in Gainesville; Top Fuel teammate Doug Kalitta qualifies No. 11 and Scott Kalitta fails to qualify in Funny Car
Gainesville, Fla., (March 17, 2007) -- In front of an enormous crowd of NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series fans Saturday at the ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals at famed Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville, Fla., native Australian Dave Grubnic lead the Team Kalitta contingent in qualifying for Sunday's final eliminations at one of drag racing's most prestigious events.
Grubnic, driver of the electric blue and black Zantrex-3 Top Fuel dragster, drove his 8,000-horsepower dragster into the No. 7 qualifying position for tomorrow's 16-car Top Fuel field with a best effort of 4.596 sec., at 330.88 mph. He will race Bob Vandergriff Jr. (4.629 sec., 321.96 mph) in the first round of eliminations.
Grubnic's teammate Doug Kalitta, driver of "Big Red", the Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, drove his bright red rail into the No. 11 qualifying position (4.630 sec., 327.03 mph). He will race No. 6 qualifier Cory McClenathan (4.585 sec., 330.07 mph) in round one.
Funny Car pilot and Kalitta Motorsports team driver Scott Kalitta, driver of the Kalitta Air Toyota Solora Funny Car, unfortunately will not get to race his nitro-fueled flopper on Sunday. His best effort to 4.875 sec., was not quite enough to make the final field of 16 Funny Cars for final eliminations. The final bump spot for the fuel coupe's eliminations ladder was 4.842 sec.
Hillary Will, driver of the KB Racing LLC Top Fuel dragster, which is managed by Kalitta Motorsports, will start Sunday in Gainesville from the No. 12 qualifying slot. She will race Doug Herbert in her eliminations opener.
Sunday's final eliminations begin at 11:00 a.m. (ET)
