Grubnic hoping for one more round in this year's Gainesville NHRA event
Gainesville, Fla., Mar. 15, 2005 - After qualifying No. 1 at last year's Mac Tools NHRA Gatornationals, "Aussie Dave" Grubnic, driver of Kalitta Motorsports' black and electric blue flame-adorned Zantrex-3 Top Fuel dragster, made the semifinals to cap off a good racing weekend.
When this season's running of the illustrious event takes place this weekend at Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville, Fla., March 17-20, fan-favorite Grubnic hopes to get one round further and then make Gainesville historic for the 42 year-old native Australian by becoming the site of his first NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series national event win.
"Yes, just one more round would be fantastic," the affable Grubnic exclaimed. "It's always fun at the Gators. The fans are great, and the event is top-notch. I'd be thrilled to get my first win in Gainesville. You bet!
"We're hoping to stay consistent. Our Zantrex-3 team has made the semifinals in each of the first two events, and we would like to keep that streak going. An extra round in Gainesville would be just fine though."
Grubnic picked up the first major win of his 11-year career last fall in Las Vegas by taking the $100,000 Budweiser Shootout crown in the special Top Fuel event, but has yet to score an NHRA national event win in seven final round appearances.
Grubnic is currently 4th in championship points (149), just twenty-seven points from the lead.
The Mac Tools NHRA Gatornationals begins Friday for the Top Fuel class with two qualifying sessions. Two more qualifying sessions follow on Saturday. The top sixteen qualified cars will race Sunday in final eliminations.
The Mac Tools NHRA Gatornationals is the third of 23 national events in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
