McClenathan sneaks in at #16
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 20, 2004) - Cory McClenathan found himself in an uncustomary position as qualifying ended today for the NHRA Mac Tools Gatornationals. The veteran driver, now in his 14th year of driving professionally, found the Carrier Boyz Racing Berryman Products Top Fuel dragster in the No. 16 and final slot on the qualifying ladder.
The last time McClenathan qualified in the 16th spot was at the 1993 Houston event. The combination of a newly resurfaced track at Gainesville Raceway, coupled with high heat and humidity, prevented the Carrier Boyz Racing team from getting untracked throughout the two days of qualifying.
The ladder matches the No. 1 qualifier with No. 16. Therefore, McClenathan will face David Grubnic. Grubnic's low elapsed time of 4.623 seconds will have lane choice over McClenathan, who ran his best elapsed time of 4.893 seconds in Friday's first session. Final eliminations get underway at 11 a.m. (ET) tomorrow.
"It's been a long weekend and the last qualifying position is definitely not the spot you want to be on race day," said Cory Mac. "We will go out there tomorrow and give it everything we got. Its been a long time since I been in this position but I do know it's a good spot for an upset."
Coming into this event, McClenathan has accumulated 105 points, good for a sixth place tie in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel point standings.
