GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 16, 2005) -- When qualifying starts Friday for the 36th annual NHRA Mac Tools Gatornationals, Cory McClenathan, driver of the Carrier Boyz FRAM AirHog Top Fuel dragster, will look to improve his performance.
Although he is No. 8 in the NHRA POWERade point standings after two of 23 races, the Lake Havasu City, Ariz., driver has only advanced to the second round of eliminations once in those two events.
"Yes, it's nice to be in the top ten in points," said McClenathan, "but this team has so much more to show. Since Gainesville Raceway is one of those tracks that has been unkind to me in the win column in the 13 times I've raced here, I would like to get things untracked and give FRAM, Honeywell, Mac Tools and the others who make our racing program possible a win here.
"We are a young, growing team and it takes time to jell together. Teams like the Bernsteins and the Dixons and the Shoemachers and everybody else that have been together for years have an edge. Also, looking at the competition, it's tougher than ever this year. It's hard just to win rounds. Nobody wants to do better than this team does.
"Our time will come. We want to continue to be consistent and go from A to B. At the same time we want to pick up the pace a bit. Hopefully, we can get this FRAM AirHog dragster jumped started here at Gainesville and like the AirHogs you see on the FRAM commercial, nothing can hold us back."
Can Cory Mac and Carrier Boyz FRAM AirHog dragster win the Mac Tools Gatornationals this weekend? Cory Mac is cautiously optimistic.
"It would be awesome to win here. It's been one of those tracks that have really challenged me," reflected McClenathan. "Trying to win here has been a tough obstacle during my career.
"It would be great if we could go into eliminations by qualifying in the top three or four. Then, although every Top Fuel is capable of winning anytime, if we could get a couple of good draws and add a bit of luck, we may have a chance. It's hard to put together four good runs on Sunday but we're going to do our best to do that."
With Todd Smith calling the tuning shots, qualifying for Cory Mac and the Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM AirHog dragster begins with two sessions on Friday, scheduled for 12:30 and 3:30 p.m., and concludes with two additional sessions on Saturday also at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. McClenathan begins his quest for the Top Fuel title on Sunday with eliminations for all classes beginning at 11 a.m. All times are local Gainesville time (ET) and subject to change at anytime.
Qualifying highlights for the NHRA Mac Tools Gatornationals can be seen on ESPN2 on early Sunday morning (Mar. 20)) from 12:30 a.m.-2:30 a.m. ESPN2 will also air same-day television coverage of eliminations from 5 until 7 p.m. on Sunday afternoon (Mar.20).
