RIVAS OUT IN SECOND ROUND DURING ACDELCO GATORNATIONALS
GAINESVILLE, Fla., March 16, 2008 - Electronic gremlins led to a second-round loss for Chris Rivas
aboard the G2 Motorsports/Drag Specialties/S&S Cycle V-Twin Pro Stock Motorcycle during today's final eliminations in the 39th Annual NHRA POWERade ACDelco GATORNATIONALS here. Rivas, one of the best during 2007 at the starting line, topped both his adversaries at the tree. He won a round-
one match with Karen Stoffer, whose motorcycle malfunctioned, by covering the ¼-mile in 7.057 seconds at 186.85 miles per hour versus her 9.304-second elapsed time at 89.94 mph. Rivas's reaction time was .039 seconds against Stoffer's .042.
During the second round, his .030 light was .053 better than Matt Guidera, but Guidera's 6.944 E.T. at 192.41 topped Rivas's problematic 7.065-second lap at 189.87 mph. "I felt real relaxed today and I'm happy with my riding," said Rivas, the 41-year-old Fresno, Calif., native. "But we all work on this motorcycle together and just could not get everything right. The motorcycle was "pogo-ing," hopping like a pogo stick, after the start, which we figure comes down to some kind of electronic issues."
According to George Smith, crew chief for G2 Motorsports/Drag Specialties/S&S Cycle racing, it was a good weekend of racing, topped by Rivas's solid performance. "Chris did a very good job," said Smith. "We'll get the motorcycle right; we'll get it to the shop in Americus (Ga.), put it on the chassis and engine dynamometers, find the electronic and engine problems and fix them. We'll address clutch-tuning issues, as well, but could use more laps to help in this effort." Going laps on the S&S-powered V-Twin is also on Rivas's wish list.
"We lost two rounds to Friday's rain out and we lost two days of runs last weekend at the Eastern Spring Testing Nationals in Valdosta (Ga.)," explained Rivas. "The more laps we can go, the better we will be." Rivas, with 52 points, takes his eighth-place standing in the 2008 POWERade NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle championship competition into the Houston area March 28-30 for the 21st Annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals in Baytown, Tex.
