BROWN RACES MATCO RAIL TO NO. 4 SPOT AT GATORNATIONALS
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 15, 2008) -- A decade ago, Antron Brown made his professional drag racing debut at Gainesville Raceway on his Suzuki Pro Stock Motorcyle. Now the recently-turned 32-year-old is driving the Matco Tools dragster at a track he's quite accustomed too. Saturday afternoon, Brown qualified his Matco Tools dragster fourth at the 39th running of the ACDelco Gatornationals with a time of 4.558 seconds.
After the opening day of qualifying was washed away for the second straight race, Brown and the Lee Beard-led Matco team had just two qualifying attempts to make the 16-car field with 21 cars attempting to make the Gatornationals. Brown used a Beard tune-up to power the Matco-backed dragster to the provisional No. 3 position with a pass of 4.640 seconds at 317.64 mph. The 16-time NHRA winner, who earned the Gatornationals PSM pole in 2001, then upped the performance by powering the blue Matco Tools dragster to a run of 4.558 at 327.51 mph to finish fourth in the Top Fuel order. Brown has now qualified first, fifth and fourth this season.J "We made two good runs and qualified in the top five," Brown said. "I couldn't be more pleased on how our team keeps stepping up. I'm looking forward to race day. I helped sell a tool box on my Matco truck ride on Thursday and I'm looking to cash in again on Sunday afternoon here at Gainesville."
Brown will battle veteran Top Fuel racer Doug Foley in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m. (ET) on Sunday morning. Foley is competing in his first event this season. Brown will appear on NHRA Race Day at 11 a.m. (ET) on ESPN2 on Sunday morning.
