Pennzoil's Ferderer named Driver of the Year

INDIANAPOLIS - Three-time world champion sportsman driver Mike Ferderer of Team Pennzoil was named the Car Craft magazine Super Gas Driver of the Year Saturday during an awards ceremony and dinner in downtown. Ferderer, who had been nominated for the same honor on three other occasions, was choked with emotion as he accepted his trophy.

"I'm a whole person now," the teary-eyed Ferderer said. "This means so much to me because it's voted on by your peers, the readers of Car Craft magazine and all of the fans across the country. It's a symbol that almost everyone in the country thinks you're the best. That in itself, well, it's overwhelming.

"A lot of times you're out there in the pits, mingling with the fans and people tell you that they think you're the best. You wonder in the back of your mind whether they even know who you are. Evidentially they do. This is like running for president and getting 99 percent of the vote. I can hardly believe it."

Readers of Car Craft magazine selected Ferderer and the rest of the 1998 Car Craft All-Star Drag Racing Team through a voting system in the magazine. Ballots for the various categories first appeared in the March '98 issue of Car Craft whereupon readers were encouraged to select their favorite driver in each class based on their performances during the 1997 season as well as the current one.

Ferderer is in his 11th year of representing Team Pennzoil. He currently competes in the Pennzoil Super Gas Pontiac and the Gumout Super Comp Dragster. Ferderer, and his wife Barbara, live in Kent, Wash.
