Whit Bazemore and the Kendall Motor Oil/Matco Tools Camaro Z28 Racing Team used a couple of bookends in qualifying for Sunday's final eliminations of the SummitRacing.com Nationals. After making the second quickest pass in Friday's opening time trial, Bazemore and crew struggled to get a handle on the brand-new Las Vegas racing surface, losing traction and shutting off early in their second and third attempts. Despite sweltering heat and a track temperature of 129 degrees in their fourth and final qualifying session, Bazemore was able to log a solid 5.047-second elapsed time, with his best top speed of 305.15 mph. Even so, Bazemore's 5.039-second effort from Friday proved to be his best, and gained him the 10th position. This set the stage for a first round encounter with veteran Al Hofmann, who qualified 7th.

"When you look at the qualifying ladder and see we're tenth, it's not that impressive. In reality, however, the field is very tight, and our Kendall/Matco Camaro was able to run well in the heat, which only a few other cars were able to do.

"I'm very confident heading into tomorrow, not only in my abilities, but in what the team can do. In the heat on race day, there are not too many guys better than Tim Richards at tuning a fuel Funny Car. Even though it's early in the season, we feel our backs are against the wall, and we're ready to fight our way back into contention.

"I really believe we are going to be strong tomorrow. However, this is an NHRA Winston Drag Race, and, as we all know, anything can happen. We're coming from the back of the back, but I like being the underdog. Hopefully, we can sneak up there an surprise our competition, and score big in Las Vegas."
