TATUM HARKER EARN WINS AT TEXAS MOTORPLEX'S LUCAS OIL SERIES RACE
ENNIS, Texas -- NHRA South Central division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors have put their second race of the season in the books. Winners at this weekend's event at the Texas Motorplex include Oklahoma City's Aaron Tatum in Top Alcohol Dragster and reigning division Top Alcohol Funny Car champ Steve Harker of Gainesville, Ga. It is the first win of the season for both drivers.
Tatum turned in his best performance of the weekend in the final round against Darvin Martinets of Lake Jackson, Texas. Tatum made a 5.291-second, 275.96 mph pass to Martinets' 5.347-second, 267.80 mph effort. That was also Martinets' best run of the race but was not enough to catch Tatum. In the semis, Tatum beat out No. 1 qualifier Spencer Massey of Fort Worth who slowed to a 17.547-second run.
Harker, who was the event's No. 1 qualifier in the class, was set to face off against Lee Callaway, Baytown, Texas. But Callaway had problems after his semifinal-round pass and was unable to make the call. Although Harker had a free pass to the winner's circle, he still made an all-out run covering the quarter-mile in 5.638 seconds at 257.19 mph.
La Grange, Texas, resident Scott Benham beat Joey Tanksley, Greenwell Springs, La., in the Comp Eliminator final while Elisha Boyd, Sumrall, Miss., earned the win in Super Stock over Bryan Chaney, Claremore, Okla. Sammy Pizzolato, Houma, La., beat out R.J. Sledge, Boerne, Texas, in the Stock Eliminator final; Austin Williams, Burleson, Texas, beat Cassey Thornburg, Forney, Texas, in Super Comp; and in Super Gas, Scooter Choate, Hubbard, Texas, took home the hardware by beating another Forney resident, Jimmy Lewis. However, that was Lewis' second final round of the day as he earned the Top Dragster title over Allen Constantine, La Place, La. In Super Street, Sid Norwood, Brandon, Miss., took the win over Greg Parson, Whitehouse, Texas, while in Top Sportsman, Brad Clark, Raymond, Miss., beat Tommy Turner, Naples, Fla., in the final. The win in Sportsman Motorcycle went to Curtis Nichols III, Alvin, Texas, when he beat James Enloe, Pairieville, La., in the final.
South Central division racers head to Houston for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Houston Raceway Park will host the event, May 16-18.
