BAZEMORE LOSES TO FORCE IN E'TOWN FIRST ROUND
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 18, 2006) - No. 9 qualifier Whit Bazemore faced his longtime nemesis, 13-time Funny Car champion John Force (No. 8 qualifier), in the opening round of eliminations at the K&N Filters SuperNationals today at Old Bridge Township Raceway, and it was Force taking the win with a 4.946-second elapsed time at 315.71 mph to Bazemore's losing 4.995/311.41.
With conditions changing every minute as the near-90-degree heat and high humidity rose, Force's team, with lane choice, elected to swap lanes just before the start, relegating Bazemore to the left lane. Force took off with a .066 reaction time to Bazemore's .072, capturing the victory by a margin of .0557 of a second.
As always, Bazemore and the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Charger Funny Car team were ready for the contest. "It's race day; we're always ready," said the two-time U.S. Nationals champion and 2003 winner her.
"We had to go down the left lane and we did. We were a little too conservative (with the tune-up), a little too careful, that's all."
"Believe me, it's frustrating for everyone on the Matco Tools team. But the guys are really working hard and we've come a long way. We've got a great team, we've got great sponsors, a great team owner. We've got everything we need to do the job and we're going to get the job done."
"We've got to do it. We can't talk anymore; we just have to make action happen."
"It's very challenging out there, and when you run the Force team, you're obviously running a legacy team. But we couldn't beat ourselves. We simply got outrun. They had second low ET of the round, we had second low non-winning ET. It's frustrating."
"But we're going to go to the next race a little bit better."
Bazemore is now eighth in NHRA Funny Car points.
Next up is the O'Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Ill., June 23-25.
